“. . . not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is . . .” (Hebrews 20:25a)
I wasn’t a DIY (do-it-yourself) kind of girl. I joined the DIY delegation out of pure necessity! I had to because the brown cherry wood Chippendale writing desk and chair set, that I ordered from an online catalog, was delivered to my door, in two 6’ x 4’ boxes full of furniture parts and screws. The tags on each box said, “Some assembly required.” In that moment, I realized that I would never be able to use my new desk and chair, to work from home, unless I took the time to empty the boxes of their contents, follow the directions enclosed, and put the pieces together myself.
The life of the church is very similar to putting together pieces of furniture. In order for the community of faith to do the work that God has intended us to do, at times, it is imperative that we assemble ourselves together. That’s why at the end of Matthew Chapter 18, Jesus is heard telling His disciples of the power and authority the church has to “bind things on earth, to loose things in heaven” (V.18), and to receive answered prayer (V. 19) whenever believers “gather together in my name” (V. 20).
Jesus is telling his disciples today that it is necessary for the church scattered, during the summer, to now be the church gathered to do the work God has called us to do. So, on this Homecoming Sunday, let’s decide “not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews 10:25) in God’s house. Then, we’ll be in the right place, at the right time to begin our new church year of ---Sunday School, praying, praising, and proclaiming the saving power of Jesus Christ! He promised to bless us with His presence if we do!
